First off, local food is fresh! Fruits and vegetables have not spent the last few weeks in a storage container losing their flavour and nutrients. Meat has not been frozen for weeks on end. Yogurt and ice-cream come directly from the farmer. And the best part… it is all delicious and without preservatives!
Local food is eco-friendly! Less energy has been wasted on food that has been transported, refrigerated, processed, and packaged. Not to mention the amount of waste created by large scale agriculture by their overuse of pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Buying local food supports small scale businesses, especially farmers. Many small scale farmers (both organic and non-organic) have had to leave their farms because they just can’t compete with the large scale agriculture companies. This is incredibly sad because if we want to ensure a food secure future for future generations, we need to support local farmers now… When we buy local we are supporting the local economy.
Buying local food connects you to the people who produce your food. Knowing where your food comes from, who grows your food, how they grow it are incredibly important. Being on the land and seeing where our food comes from can have a profound effect on the way we view nature, climate change, and energy use.
Buying local is fun! Who doesn’t enjoy a Saturday morning out at the farmers market? Or going to the farm to pick up your community supported agriculture (CSA) share?
